Marion Post Wolcott studied photography in New York, Paris, and Vienna before returning to the United States and trying to make a living as a freelance photographer. In 1938 she was hired as a full-time documentary photographer for the Farm Security Administration (FSA) working under Roy Stryker. She challenged prevailing gender norms by traveling independently across the United States and meeting with and photographing people she didn't know. Wolcott is well known for her candid documentary photographs of the effects of the Great Depression. From 1938 to 1942 she produced thousands of photographs of people and places in New England, Kentucky, North Carolina, Florida, Louisiana, Florida, and Mississippi.
