Thomas W. Evans Collection

This three-quarter length portrait shows Dr. Evans from just above the knee. He is slightly turning towards the viewer and his face is beautifully and realistically rendered. He has a warm expression, as does the painting as a whole. Gervex was one of the most important and successful painters in France in the late 19th century, famous for his portraits, genre scenes and other larger commissions he was given to decorate public buildings.
