Susan Rothenberg (American, 1945 – 2020)
#2013.0001.0579
Contemporary American artist Susan Rothenberg is known for her gestural, glyph-like paintings of animal and human figures. Her bold outlines enclose shapes which are as much explorations of the textural properties of paint itself as they are representational images. Rothenberg was born in 1945 in Buffalo, New York and studied art at Cornell University before moving to New York City, where she began exhibiting her work in the mid-1970s. She first received acclaim for her series of paintings depicting horses, and now lives and works in New Mexico. Her works can be found in the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Tate Gallery in London, and many other institutions around the world.
