Billie Lawless is known for his eccentric multimedia works. While Lifesavers is entirely made of steel, some of his other sculptures include material like light fixtures and elements like music, video, and moving parts.Lawless gained some fame after the scandal surrounding his piece Green Lightning. After its inauguration in Buffalo, the city mayor and other officials took offense to the depiction of male genitalia in the sculpture. They tried to destroy Green Lightning but were stopped by Lawless, who climbed to the top of the 30-foot sculpture.
