Jennifer Bartlett (American, 1941 – 2022)
#2013.0001.0545

Jennifer Bartlett is a painter and printmaker who incorporates both figurative and abstract elements into her work. Bartlett was born in Long Beach, California in 1941, and received her MFA from the Yale School of Art and Architecture in 1965, before moving to New York City. In the 1970s, Bartlett garnered attention for her signature room-sized installations that she created by hanging individually painted steel plates in large grids. In a single piece, Bartlett often traverses styles and influences, exploring the possibilities of color, shape, line, and motif. She has said of her practice: "I would explain something, and by the time I had explained it, I had totally contradicted it. That's okay with me."
