Lisa in Saint-Tropez

Lisa in Saint-Tropez, 1975
Helmut Newton (German / Australian, 1920 – 2004)
#1981.0007.0013

Helmut Newton began studying photography under German photographer Yva (Else Neulander Simon). In 1938 Newton, at the age of 18, was forced to flee Nazi-occupied Berlin. He traveled to Singapore where he worked as a news photographer on the Singapore Straits Times. In 1948 he married June Brunell Browne, an actress and model. She took up photography and under the pseudonym of Alice Springs they worked on a series of photographic collaborations.

Renowned as a high fashion photographer for French and British Vogue, Newton was acclaimed for the erotic poses of his models and striking lighting effects. Newton later turned to the erotic art nude, increasing his fame with regular photo sets commissioned for Playboy magazine. The women portrayed in Helmut Newton’s photographs appear glamorous, powerful, and hedonistic. In Lisa in St. Tropez and Patti Hansen Manhattan one sees an empowered, single, sexually- liberated woman who is mistress of her own infinite possibilities.
