Brick House

Brick House, 2019, Bronze
Simone Leigh (American, born 1967)
#L2020.5.1

Simone Leigh's 16-feet tall sculpture of a Black woman's head atop a round structure known as 'Brick House' can be found near the corner of 34th & Walnut Street, at the entrance of College Green.  The piece features cowrie shells on the woman's braids to symbolize wealth, femininity, and the African slave trade where shells were used as currency.  The sculpture is a gift from 1987 Penn and 1988 Wharton MBA graduate Glenn Fuhrman and 1995 Penn graduate Amanda Fuhrman, who decided to place this on Penn's campus after learning that the artist hoped to display her work on a college campus.
