Alexander Stirling Calder (American, 1870 – 1945)
#0000.0231

A part in a series of companion pieces (Europe, Asia, and America) this sculpture is meant to represent an allegory of a continent depicted by two individuals. Calder made this sculpture specifically for the Penn Museum of Anthropology and Archaeology, and had the figures turned toward the museum, rather than the street, to increase the sense that the museum held a magnetic attention from people all over the world.
