America

America, 1931
Alexander Stirling Calder (American, 1870 – 1945)
#0000.0233

Forming one part of 4 companion pieces, (including Europe, Asia, and Africa) this sculpture is meant to represent the diversity of American cultures with representatives from North and South America, pictured in a pair. Calder fashioned these specifically for the Penn Museum of Anthropology and Archaeology, with the figures facing the museum courtyard in a contemplative gaze.
