German-born Ernest Fiene left his native country in 1912, eventually settling in New York. His art chronicles the American experience, through landscapes and depictions of labor and industry.
The hex sign appearing above the red barn door is a form of Pennsylvania Dutch folk art. These designs often took the form of a flower or star.
