The American painter Henry Inman was native to New York where he studied with John Wesley Jarvis and went on to serve as Vice President of the National Academy of Design. In 1844-45, Inman traveled to England where he painted several cultural celebrities, including the English Romantic poet William Wordsworth. Inman created this painting from a drawing he made at Wordsworth's home and garden, Rydal Mount. Within the painting, Inman introduced two figures meant to represent himself and Wordsworth.
