Marisol Escobar (Venezuelan, 1930 – 2016)

Marisol Escobar, known by the mononym Marisol, was a painter and sculptor and one of only a few women associated with the Pop Art movement in the United States in the 1960s. Born in France in 1930 to Venezuelan parents, Marisol spent her high school years in Los Angeles, eventually returning to France to study art at the Paris École des Beaux-Arts. Marisol moved to New York in 1950 to study at the Art Students League and the New School for Social Research, and she also studied with Hans Hofmann at his private school. During the first half of her career, Marisol began creating assemblage sculptures using non-traditional materials. These works were created in a folk-art style and sometimes reference pre-Columbian sculpture. Marisol’s work often engages with the deconstruction of prescribed gender roles and offers critiques of traditional constructs of femininity.
This piece, dated 1978, was created following a five-year hiatus Marisol took from working to travel the world. When Marisol returned to her art she experimented with a more personal, figurative style using colored pencil and crayon.
