David Smith (American, 1906 – 1965)
David Smith is acclaimed for his large-scale steel sculptures featuring abstract geometric forms. Smith built tanks and locomotives during World War II, honing his skills as a welder. The artist was also a prolific painter and draftsman, turning out hundreds of drawings a year. This gestural work is reminiscent of his sculptures, with bold shapes moving against negative space.
