Dawn and Moon, 1964, Serigraph
Dorothy Bowman (American, born 1927)
#0000.0190

Dorothy Bowman is a painter and printmaker whose art speaks to her life living and working in California. Bowman was born in Hollywood, California in 1927, and studied graphic arts in Los Angeles at the Chouinard Institute and the Jepson Institute. She married fellow artist Howard Bradford and they moved to Big Sur, California, where they became part of a vibrant artistic community in the 1950s and 60s. Bowman works in serigraph printmaking, often layering designs and fields of color to create dense patterns. Her detailed prints make use of overlapping forms and tones to create striking optical effects.
