The Bathroom in My Studio on Broome Street

The Bathroom in My Studio on Broome Street, 1971, Serigraph
Clayton Pond (American, born 1941)
#2013.0001.0343

Raised in the comfortable suburbs of Long Island, Clayton Pond was one of the early waves of artists to move into studio space in SoHo, lower Manhattan. Gritty, industrial loft-living became a major inspiration in his work during the late 1960’s. In this work, Pond’s bright, cheerful colors convey a charming and warm interior despite the inconvenient placement of the bathtub against a door, ad hoc bathtub base, and make-shift overhead lighting.
