Maurice Delcourt (French, 1877 – 1916)
Maurice Delcourt was a French painter and lithographer who depicted suburban life of the 19th century. In this work, Delcourt captures three figures, seemingly unaware. The two figures in the foreground turn as if being interrupted. The figure in the background arranges a flower in a vase. The unusual composition and informal nature of the poses seem to mimic a photographic snapshot, a new medium that many painters begin to explore and respond to in their work during this time.
