William Hogarth (British, 1697 – 1764)
#2013.0001.0532
English artist William Hogarth produced Characters and Caricaturas as a response to critics who dismissed the exaggerated features of Hogarth's characters as caricature. He intended that the print serve as an illustration of the difference between characterization and caricature. The print was originally produced as a subscription ticket for Hogarth's 1743 series of prints Marriage A-la-Mode. At the foot of the picture, Hogarth illustrated the difference between character illustration and caricature by reproducing three character figures from the works of Raphael alongside four caricatures.
