Indian Summer II

Indian Summer II, ca. 1960, Woodcut
Beatrice V. Berlin
#2013.0001.0322

Beatrice Berlin was a painter and printmaker whose career spanned many decades. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1922, Berlin studied at the Moore College of Art and learned printmaking with the artists Samuel Maitin and Hitoshi Nakazato. She worked in various mediums, including drypoint, watercolor, and collograph technique, as well as woodblock printing, and her work is both representational and abstract, showing an appreciation for the individual characteristics of each medium.

This two-color woodcut nostalgically depicts an unusually warm fall day. The image serves as evidence of the wood block printing process, as the visual texture of the wood grain is visible in the red inked background.
