Abraham Hankins was an American artist born in Russia in 1895. Hankins lived in Philadelphia, where many of his paintings and prints are held. Hankins died in 1963.
Unlike some of his other more colorful Modernist works, this woodcut print, Forms by the Ocean #18, coincided with a series of monochromatic prints Hankins produced c. 1961. Printed in black ink against white paper, Forms by the Ocean depicts several abstract figures that are evocative of both dancing figures and coastal geographies.
