American Impressionist painter Childe Hassam traveled to France to study Impressionist painting from 1886-1889 before returning to the United States and settling in New York City. Barbara Weinberg writes for The Metropolitan Museum of Art that Hassam was “equally adept at capturing the excitement of modern cities and the charms of country retreats.”
