Harry Carmean was born in 1922 in Anthony, Kansas. He began his career as a painter after serving in the U.S. Army during World War II. He studied at the French L’ecole des Beaux Arts and at ArtCenter College of Design, where he would later teach for forty-six years. Carmean is known for his incorporation of Renaissance, Mannerist and Baroque elements into his figurative paintings. This piece, Les Baigneuses, demonstrates his painterly style and his affinity for the portrayal of nude bathers. Beyond painting, he has worked with drawings, etchings, engravings and pastels. Today, he is perhaps best known for his series on acrobats, which he created throughout the 90’s.
