Banista Antigua y Honesta

Banista Antigua y Honesta, ca. 1950, Oil on Canvas
Felipe Orlando (Cuban, 1911 – 2001)
#1986.0005.0025

Felipe Orlando is a Cuban artist, writer, and teacher who studied at the University of Havana, as well as the painting workshop of Jorge Arche and Victor Manuel. He lived in Cuba from 1914-46, after which he moved to New York City and finally settled in Mexico City. Though he trained in a workshop with academic painters, Orlando’s works would be avant-garde in style and continually evolve throughout his artistic career. This piece, Banista Antigua y Honesta, is representative of Orlando’s mid-career style. The piece utilizes bold colors to render the scene, where an abstract figure is shown in front of a landscape dotted with several other figures.
