Composition in Cobalt Blue, 2016, Mixed Media
Patricia Pickman Udell (American, born 1956)
#2016.0002.0001

Patricia Pickman Udell is a sculptor and painter who often works with bold colors and abstract shapes. Born in 1956 in New York City, Udell received both her B.A. in Design of the Environment in 1978, as well as her B.F.A. in Sculpture in 1979, from the University of Pennsylvania. Much of the artist’s work explores the relationship between the arc and the line, two elements that she considers to be the basis of her artistic production. She is also interested in the female form, which has been a theme throughout her work, particularly the female nude. Her sculptural works are often made from plaster painted with bright colors, and she has a particular affinity for cobalt blue. Udell has said of her practice: “I see myself as an evolved maker of things.”

Her 2016 piece Composition in Cobalt Blue hangs in Penn’s Perry World House.
