Art Conservation

Through Penn’s sculpture maintenance program, outdoor sculptures are conserved each year. In this photo, Douglas Martenson applies a protective treatment to the All Wars Memorial Flagpole.
These before-and-after conservation images illustrate how a painting’s appearance is significantly improved when years of accumulated soiling are removed. This painting, Gustave Neymark’s Military Scene, is installed in the School of Dental Medicine’s Thomas W. Evans Building.

The Penn Art Collection oversees the care and conservation of University Art Collection. While the Penn Art Collection makes arrangements for art conservation on campus, individual departments are responsible for all conservation costs, including art handling fees. All art conservation is contracted through art conservation professionals. We work with a variety of art conservators with specializations in paintings, works on paper, textiles, and decorative arts.
